Device¶
Purpose¶
In Clarity Transform, Device is a CI type on the CMDB screen, with its own card. Each record is one device. Its columns hold configuration data (for example Operating System, Cpu Cores, Memory Gb and Private Ip Addresses) and migration data (for example Move Group, Migration Plan and Migration Status).
The owner field is Device Owner. A device is linked to an application through its Application column, which takes the name of an Application record. Other links between records are held as records of the Relationship CI type, not on the device.
Normalised values are held in the columns Hardware Model Normalised, Hardware Vendor Normalised, Hardware Version Normalised and Operating System Normalised. There is no normalise action on the grid.
Where to find it¶
Go to Discover → CMDB, then select the Device card in the card strip. Clarity loads the Device grid on the same page. There is no separate menu item or page for devices.

The grid also has an Event column, whose help text reads "The migration event of this device's move group. Change the move group to change it.", and a Test Device column.
Some columns carry help text in the form:
- Tenant: "Owning tenant boundary - vCD Org, Nutanix NCM Project, cloud account or subscription."
- Workload Group: "Unit of co-deployment - a vCD vApp or an NCM Self-Service application. Distinct from the inference-derived business application."
- Comms Sent Date: "Date the latest approval communication was sent"
The Id, Provider Id, Is Deleted and Deleted On columns are not offered in Toggle columns; Export All Fields includes them.
Custom fields added under Settings → Field Management → Custom Fields appear as extra columns. The Device grid loads its rows from the server, one page at a time, so searching and filtering are done by the server.
Values¶
The form's lists for Device are under Form, below. App Smoke Test Required is a hidden column with no field on the form. Its dropdown list under Settings → Field Management → Dropdown Lists is Yes, No.
Values seen in the grid data:
- Power State: Reachable
- Role: for example Web Server, or File Services, Web Server
- Role Discovery Confidence: Low, High
Filters¶
Every column has a filter row, and the grid has a Search: box and a page-size selector (10, 25, 50 or All entries per page).
The grid does not keep its Search: text, column filters, sort order or page size: each time you select the card, it opens sorted by Name (A to Z), 25 rows per page, with no search or filters. If the grid shows fewer rows than you expect, clear the Search: box and the filter row.
By default the Device grid lists only devices whose Scope is In scope. Devices that are Out of scope, or that have no Scope yet (for example a device that discovery has just added), are not listed until you select Display all scopes... in the toolbar. The filter is on again each time you open the grid.
Actions¶
The Device grid toolbar has:
- Create New, Edit, Remove selected, Clear selection and Reload table data. Create New opens the Create new entry form. Edit opens the Edit entry form for the row you have selected.
- Enable spreadsheet editing: turns on editing in the grid itself, one cell at a time. Each change is saved as soon as you press Enter or leave the cell. See Edit records in the grid. There is no bulk-edit button.
- Download menu: Export Visible Fields or Export All Fields. Exports are CSV.
- Display all scopes...: lists devices of every scope, not only In scope devices. The button then reads Display in scope only..., which turns the filter back on.
- Save columns: saves which columns are shown, under a name you choose. It does not save the search, filters or sort order. See Save and reload a column layout.
- Load columns: shows a saved set of columns again, or the default set (Default (as configured)).
- Toggle columns: shows or hides columns, with a Search columns box.
- Validations: turns highlighting of the Mandatory and Suggested fields (set under Field Validations) on or off.
- Row height: changes the height of the grid's rows.
The toolbar differs between CI types: the CMDB page lists the differences. The Device grid has no Import CSV button. To load devices from a file, use the CSV Import integration, whose Ci Class offers Device.
Each row has a View Details action. It opens a read-only side panel titled Device Details that lists the record's populated fields (only those whose columns are shown by default), followed by Created By, Created On, Last Updated By and Last Updated. Select the action again, or the panel's close button, to close it. If listening ports have been discovered on the device, the panel ends with a Discovered Listening Ports section, listing each port as protocol and port number (for example TCP/443), with the suggested service and the source where known. See Discovered Listening Ports.
Form¶
The Create new entry form and the Edit entry form have the same fields; the edit form opens filled in. A Search... box at the top of the form finds a field. The fields are grouped in section cards, in this order. Fields are text unless a type or a list is given.
- Device Details:

- Custom Fields: the custom fields defined for devices, if any.
The footer has Cancel and Save.
How to¶
Add a device¶
- Go to Discover → CMDB and select the Device card.
- In the toolbar, select Create New. The Create new entry form opens.
- Enter a Name, and fill in the other fields you need, for example Application, Environment and Operating System.
- Select Save, or select Cancel to close the form without saving.
Set a device's migration target¶
- On the Device grid, select the device's row. Select any cell except Name: selecting the Name opens that record's edit form at once.
- In the toolbar, select Edit. The Edit entry form opens with the device's values.
- In Source to Target Mapping, choose a Target Cluster. The Target Storage and Target Network lists fill from the cluster.
- Choose Target Storage, Target Network, Target Managed By and Target Migration Appliance, then select Save.
Place a device in a move group¶
- On the Device grid, select the device's row. Select any cell except Name: selecting the Name opens that record's edit form at once.
- In the toolbar, select Edit. The Edit entry form opens with the device's values.
- In the Migration Planning section, select the move group in Move Group.
- A move group marked "(guard rails)" cannot be selected because the device breaks one of its guard-rail rules. Hover over it to see the reason, correct the device's fields (for example its Scope), save, and edit the device again.
- A move group marked "(event locked)" belongs to a locked event and cannot be selected.
- Select Save. If Clarity finds that the assignment breaks the move group's guard rails, it shows the reason and asks "Guard rails are advisory. Override and assign to this move group anyway?" Select OK to assign the device anyway, or Cancel to leave the form open so that you can correct the device first. A locked event cannot be overridden.
The device's Event follows from its move group: to change the event, change the move group.
Find a device¶
- Go to Discover → CMDB.
- Select the Device card.
- Type in the Search: box, or enter a value in the filter row of a column such as Name or Operating System.
- If the device is not listed, select Display all scopes.... The grid lists only In scope devices until you do. A device that discovery has just added may have no Scope yet, so it is hidden until you do this or set its Scope to In scope.
List the devices of an application¶
- Go to Discover → CMDB and select the Device card.
- In the filter row of the Application column, enter the application's name.
- The grid shows only the devices with that value in Application. Select Display all scopes... to include devices that are not In scope.
List the devices in a move group¶
- On the Device grid, select Toggle columns and show the Move Group column.
- In the filter row of the Move Group column, enter the move group's name.
- The grid shows only the devices with that value in Move Group. Select Display all scopes... to include devices that are not In scope.
View a device's details¶
- On the Device grid, select View Details on the row.
- The Device Details side panel opens and lists the record's populated fields, followed by Discovered Listening Ports if any ports have been discovered on the device.
Show a hidden column¶
- On the Device grid, select Toggle columns in the toolbar.
- Find the column, for example Device Owner or Migration Status, with the Search columns box, and select it.
- To keep the layout, select Save columns.
Export devices¶
- On the Device grid, open the download menu.
- Select Export Visible Fields or Export All Fields.
