Application Mapping

Purpose

Application Mapping is the Clarity Transform screen that draws applications, devices and the other configuration items they relate to as a graph. The screen header is Service Mapping Overview, and its subtitle reads: "Showing all services and their relationships. Click on an application in the sidebar to focus on specific relationships. Right-click any node or connection for details."

Where to find it

Discover → Application Mapping

What you see

Below the subtitle, Clarity shows a count in the form Total Nodes: N | Relationships: N. The count is of what was loaded for the current view. Filters do not change it.

When no graph data comes back, the graph area shows "No data available to display." If the graph cannot be loaded or drawn, it says "This graph could not be loaded" or "This graph could not be drawn", with the number of nodes and links. For a very large graph it adds "Try a narrower scope."

You can drag nodes, scroll to zoom (from 50% to 500%) and pan. The graph's own corner toolbar has Save as Image and View Data, a read-only list of the graph's data.

Application list

The left panel lists applications, with a Search Applications box. Select an application in the list to focus the graph on that application's relationships. The header then changes from "Service Mapping Overview" to "Service Mapping - " followed by the application name. The selected application and layout are remembered for the rest of the browser session, and Reload redraws the graph for them.

Toolbar

  • Zoom In
  • Zoom Out
  • Reset: resets the zoom (tooltip "Reset zoom").
  • Full Screen
  • Reload: reloads the graph (tooltip "Reload graph").
  • Save Layout: saves the node positions (tooltip "Save node positions"). No confirmation is shown on screen.
  • Tree Graph: switches to a tree, hierarchical layout (tooltip "Tree / hierarchical layout").
  • Force Directed: switches to a force-directed layout (tooltip "Force-directed layout"). This layout loads at most 150 nodes.
  • Clear All: clears all filters (tooltip "Clear all filters").

Filters

The Filter Graph Nodes section has these fields:

  • Name: free text (placeholder "Search name...").
  • CI Class: All / Application / Device / Database / Container Namespace / Container Workload / Container Service / Container Node / Container Cluster.
  • Environment: All / Production / Pre-Production / UAT / Test / Development / DR.
  • Scope: All was the only option seen in this build.
  • Migration Status: All / Not Started / Pre Seeding / Cutover / Testing / Migrated / Decommissioned / Dropped / Failed / On Hold / Blocked / Cancelled / Rolled Back.

The filters work on the graph already loaded, as you type or choose. They do not reload it. A node must match every filter you set. Matching nodes are shown in full, their direct neighbours are shown faintly, and every other node is hidden. Clear All resets the fields and shows every node again.

Graph key

The graph key distinguishes these node types: Application, Device, Database, Host, Cluster, Datacenter and Mgmt Server.

Node and connection details

Hover over a node to see its name, Type, number of Relationships, and its Move Group and Status where recorded. Hover over a connection to see its source and target, and the Port, Protocol, Bandwidth and Latency where recorded. A connection between move groups shows "Migration risk: crosses move group boundary". The hover box ends with "Right-click for full details".

Right-click a node or a connection to open its details in a side panel. While the panel is open, right-click the graph again to close it.

For a connection, the panel is headed Connection Details and shows Source and Target, then, where they are recorded, Relationship Type, Protocol, Source Port, Destination Port, Bandwidth (MB), Latency (ms) and Additional Details. A connection between records in different move groups is marked "Crosses move group boundary".

For a node, the panel is loaded from the server. If it cannot be loaded, it shows "Error loading details."

Firewall and load balancer notice

Where the graph routes connections through a firewall or a load balancer, a notice above the graph says how many, for example "permitted dependency edge(s) routed through the firewall appliance that permits them" or "hosting edge(s) routed through the load balancer that fronts the host". It also counts connections that could not be attributed to an appliance, or were left direct. A direct connection does not mean the path has no firewall: it means no appliance could be attributed.

How to

Focus the graph on one application

  1. Go to Discover → Application Mapping.
  2. Type part of the application's name in Search Applications.
  3. Select the application in the left panel.

Narrow the graph with filters

  1. In Filter Graph Nodes, enter a Name or choose a CI Class, Environment, Scope or Migration Status. The graph updates as you type.
  2. Read the result: matching nodes in full, their direct neighbours faint, everything else hidden.
  3. To remove every filter, select Clear All.

Change the layout

  1. Select Tree Graph for a hierarchical layout, or Force Directed for a force-directed layout.
  2. To keep the current node positions, select Save Layout.
  • CMDB: browse the configuration items shown on the graph, including the Relationship CI type.
  • Application Interviews: the New Interview screen has its own Application Relationship Graph dialog.
