Capacity Planning¶
Purpose¶
The Clarity Transform Capacity Planning screen compares source and target clusters and lets you test a move group against a target cluster as a what-if scenario. Its subtitle reads: "Compare source VMware clusters with target Nutanix clusters, then run a Move Group what-if scenario against a selected target cluster. CPU planning uses the configured max CPU overcommit ratio on target clusters, while RAM and storage remain physical-capacity checks."
Capacity Planning is a single screen. It has selects, a reserve toggle and a Reset Scenario button, and no edit grid.
Where to find it¶
Plan → Readiness → Capacity Planning
What you see¶
Actions¶
- EVENT: a select.
- MOVE GROUP SCENARIO: a select. The move group you choose here is the what-if scenario.
- Reset Scenario
The target cluster is chosen in the what-if scenario. It is not stored on the move group, and the Move Groups grid has no target cluster column.
Consolidation overview¶
The Consolidation overview section is described on screen as "Spare capacity that could be reclaimed from source clusters, after holding back the HA failure reserve." It contains:
- A reserve toggle with the options Auto, N+1 and N+2.
- The cards Hosts reclaimable, Full-drain candidates and Strong candidates.
- TOP CONSOLIDATION OPPORTUNITIES, where entries can carry a badge such as Drain candidate.
Cluster panels¶
The VMware Clusters and Nutanix Clusters panels each have a table with these columns:
- Name
- CPU
- RAM (GB)
- Storage (GB)
Each cluster is shown as a card. The table and the cluster's own capacity figures appear only after you expand the cluster's card. The expanded card shows Current VMs, Hosts, the CPU, memory and storage figures, Reclaimable hosts, HA reserve held, Hosts to run load and Binding resource. It also has Test full drain.
On the card, storage is shown as "Provisioned N GB · Used N GB".
How capacity is checked¶
- CPU: checked against each target cluster's Max Cpu Overcommit Ratio. This is a column of the Cluster CI type on Discover → CMDB.
- RAM and storage: checked against physical capacity.
There are no fixed percentage thresholds for CPU, RAM or storage, and no capacity threshold setting in Settings → System → System Settings.
How to¶
Test a move group against a target cluster¶
- Go to Plan → Readiness → Capacity Planning.
- In EVENT, select the event.
- In MOVE GROUP SCENARIO, select the move group to test. A WHAT-IF SCENARIO panel shows the VMs in scope, the incoming CPU, RAM and storage, the resolved source VMs, the source clusters touched and the participating source clusters, with the badge "SELECT A TARGET CLUSTER TO PROJECT PLACEMENT".
- Select CLICK TO TEST HERE on a Nutanix cluster card to test the move group against that cluster.
To try a different move group, select it in MOVE GROUP SCENARIO.
Test a full drain of a source cluster¶
- Go to Plan → Readiness → Capacity Planning.
- In the VMware Clusters panel, expand the source cluster's card and select Test full drain. A drain panel opens and reads "Now click a Nutanix target cluster to test whether it can absorb a full drain of" the source cluster.
- Select a Nutanix cluster card. The drain panel shows whether that cluster can absorb the source cluster's full load. While the drain panel is open, selecting a target card runs the drain test, not the move group test.
- To leave the drain test, close the drain panel. Reset Scenario also closes it.
