Application

Purpose

In Clarity Transform, Application is a CI type on the CMDB screen, with its own card. Each record is one application. Its columns hold ownership, support, migration and assessment data, for example App Owner, Business Unit, Criticality, Data Classification, Migration Plan and Transformation Plan.

The assessment fields used by the Assess screens (Time Classification, Business Value, Technology Fit, Functional Fit, Lifecycle Phase, the lifecycle dates, the annual costs and Business Capability L1, Business Capability L2 and Business Capability L3) are columns of the Application record. They are hidden by default.

Applications are linked to devices through the Application column on the Device grid, and through records of the Relationship CI type.

Where to find it

Go to Discover → CMDB, then select the Application card in the card strip. Clarity loads the Application grid on the same page. There is no separate menu item or page for applications.

Custom fields added under Settings → Field Management → Custom Fields appear as extra columns.

Values

The form's lists for Application are under Form, below. Two more lists:

  • Transformation Plan: the dropdown list configured under Settings → Field Management → Dropdown Lists is Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Repurchase, Retire, Retain, Relocate. The data also holds Replace. The field is not on the Application form; it is set on Rationalise.
  • The Assess → Application Portfolio charts show these values for two of the hidden columns:
    • Time Classification: Tolerate, Invest, Migrate, Eliminate
    • Lifecycle Phase: Plan, Phase In, Active, Phase Out, End of Life

Filters

Every column has a filter row, and the grid has a Search: box and a page-size selector (10, 25, 50 or All entries per page).

The grid does not keep its Search: text, column filters, sort order or page size: each time you select the card, it opens sorted by Name (A to Z), 25 rows per page, with no search or filters. If the grid shows fewer rows than you expect, clear the Search: box and the filter row.

By default the grid hides applications whose Scope is Out of scope. To list them, select Display all scopes... in the toolbar. The filter is on again each time you open the grid.

Actions

The Application grid toolbar has:

  • Create New, Edit, Remove selected, Clear selection and Reload table data. Create New opens the Create new entry form. Edit opens the Edit entry form for the row you have selected.
  • Enable spreadsheet editing: turns on editing in the grid itself, one cell at a time. Each change is saved as soon as you press Enter or leave the cell. See Edit records in the grid. There is no bulk-edit button.
  • Download menu: Export Visible Fields or Export All Fields. Exports are CSV.
  • Display all scopes...: lists applications of every scope, including Out of scope. The button then reads Display in scope only..., which turns the filter back on.
  • Save columns: saves which columns are shown, under a name you choose. It does not save the search, filters or sort order. See Save and reload a column layout.
  • Load columns: shows a saved set of columns again, or the default set (Default (as configured)).
  • Toggle columns: shows or hides columns, with a Search columns box.
  • Validations: turns highlighting of the Mandatory and Suggested fields (set under Field Validations) on or off.
  • Row height: changes the height of the grid's rows.

The toolbar differs between CI types: the CMDB page lists the differences. The Application grid has no Import CSV button. To load applications from a file, use the CSV Import integration, whose Ci Class offers Application.

Each row has a View Details action. It opens a read-only side panel, titled with the CI type, that lists the record's populated fields, followed by Created By, Created On, Last Updated By and Last Updated. Only fields whose columns are shown by default are listed, whatever columns you have turned on. Select the action again, or the panel's close button, to close it.

Form

The Create new entry form and the Edit entry form have the same fields, except Relationships, which only the Edit entry form shows; the edit form opens filled in. A Search... box at the top of the form finds a field. The fields are grouped in section cards, in this order. Fields are text unless a type or a list is given. No field is marked as required.

The assessment columns (TIME, fit scores, lifecycle phase dates, costs and business capabilities) and Transformation Plan are grid columns with no field on this form.

An application you add with Create New is saved with Integration set to Manual, so all its fields stay editable when you open it from its Name.

The footer has Cancel and Save.

How to

Add an application

  1. Go to Discover → CMDB and select the Application card.
  2. In the toolbar, select Create New. The Create new entry form opens.
  3. Enter a Name, and fill in the other fields you need, for example Criticality, Environment and App Owner.
  4. Select Save, or select Cancel to close the form without saving.

Edit an application

  1. On the Application grid, select the application's row. Select any cell except Name: selecting the Name opens that record's edit form at once.
  2. In the toolbar, select Edit. The Edit entry form opens with the application's values.
  3. Change the fields you need, then select Save.

Add a relationship from an application

You can add a relationship for an application from its own edit form, as well as from the Relationship card.

  1. On the Application grid, select the application's Name. The Edit Application form opens. (Selecting the row and then Edit opens the same form, titled Edit entry.)
  2. Scroll to the Relationships section and select Add.
  3. The relationship form opens with Source Entity Class set to application and Source Entity Name set to this application. You cannot change them.
  4. Select the Relationship Type and the Target Entity Class. The Target Entity Name list then fills with the records of that class; select one.
  5. Select Save. The relationship is saved straight away, even if you then select Cancel on the application's form. It is listed in the Relationships table and on the Relationship grid.

To change a relationship, select its row in the Relationships table and select Edit. To remove one, select its row, select Delete, then Delete again to confirm. Both change the Relationship record at once.

The Source Entity Class, Relationship Type and Target Entity Class lists come from the relationship dropdown lists under Settings → Field Management → Dropdown Lists. If a relationship holds a value that is not in those lists, for example one written by an integration, the form shows it as the value followed by "(not in list)" and keeps it when you save, rather than changing it. If the lists cannot be loaded, they show only "Please Select..." and no relationship can be added.

Find an application

  1. Go to Discover → CMDB.
  2. Select the Application card.
  3. Type in the Search: box, or enter a value in the filter row of a column such as Name or Business Unit.

List applications by criticality

List the devices of an application

  1. Go to Discover → CMDB and select the Device card.
