Infrastructure Services

Purpose

Infrastructure Services is a Clarity Transform dashboard of the service roles recorded for the devices in the estate, for example Web Server, Database, Directory Services, File Services and Appliance, and of the applications discovered running on them. It answers: what is each server actually doing? The on-screen subtitle reads: "Analyze server roles and applications running across your infrastructure".

It is read-only: nothing on it changes data. Its figures come from the Role and Role Apps fields on the Device records in the CMDB, which discovery fills in, and from the services found by open-port scans. The page loads everything when it opens. Reload the page to see later changes.

Where to find it

Discover → Data Analysis → Infrastructure Services. The page header is Infrastructure Services Dashboard.

What you see

Cards

  • DEVICES WITH ROLES
  • UNIQUE SERVER ROLES: "Role categories".
  • UNIQUE APPLICATIONS
  • UNKNOWN ROLES: "Requires classification".

Two progress bars show how complete the role data is: "N% of in-scope devices" for roles, and "N% of devices have apps defined" for role applications.

If the figures cannot be loaded, a red banner reads "Failed to load dashboard data." Close it with its × and reload the page.

Charts

  • Server Roles Distribution: a pie chart of the recorded role values.
  • Top 15 Role Applications: a bar chart.
  • Server Roles by Environment: a stacked bar chart with one bar per environment, split by role.
  • Applications by Server Role: a stacked bar chart with one bar per role, split by role application.
  • Discovered Services (Listening Ports): a pie chart of the services found by open-port scans. Until a scan has found any, it reads "No discovered listening-port services yet. Run a network scan."

Hover over a chart for its values. Each chart has icons at its top right: Restore, which resets the chart's view (it does not reload the data), and Save as Image, which downloads the chart as a picture. Bar charts also have Zoom and Zoom Reset icons. A chart with nothing to show displays a message instead, for example "No role data available", "No role application data available", "No environment data available" or "No role application mapping data available".

Device Service Details

A grid with the columns:

  • Name
  • Role: values seen include Web Server, Database, Directory Services, File Services, Appliance, General Server, Infrastructure, Log Management, Network Services, Nutanix CVM and Powered Off, and free-text descriptive roles. There is no fixed list of roles.
  • RoleApps: the software discovered on the device, for example SQL Server, PostgreSQL or NGINX Web Server. A device can have several, separated by commas.
  • Environment
  • OperatingSystem
  • PowerState

The grid is sorted by Role until you change the sort. The grid toolbar has a back arrow, which returns to the previous page in your browser, and Export CSV, which downloads the visible columns. The rows have no row actions. To change a device's role, edit the device on the Device grid.

Filters

The grid remembers its Search: text, column filters, sort order and page size in your browser between visits. If the grid shows fewer rows than you expect, clear the Search: box and the filter row.

How to

See what the servers are doing

  1. Go to Discover → Data Analysis → Infrastructure Services.
  2. Read Server Roles Distribution for the mix of roles, and Top 15 Role Applications for the most common software.
  3. Read UNKNOWN ROLES for the number of devices whose role still needs classifying, and the two progress bars for how complete the role data is.
  4. In Device Service Details, find a device to see its Role and RoleApps. To find the devices still to classify, sort or filter on Role for devices whose role is Unknown or empty. To export the grid, select Export CSV.
  5. Classify a device by editing Role on its Device record, then reload this page.
